Removing the Confidence Gap: Using AI to Improve Access and Quality in Mental Health Care
Join Chris Griffiths for an advance presentation of the findings and receive an early copy of the report, ahead of its official launch at Transforming Mental Health in NZ in Wellington on 19 October. Be among the first to see Tacklit's 2026 AI in Mental Health Services report, examine four real-world implementations and put your questions to Chris in a live Q&A.
Demand for mental health services continues to grow, while workforce shortages and constrained resources limit the sector's ability to respond. AI offers significant promise to improve access to and quality of care by reducing administrative work, strengthening decision support and enabling new models of service delivery. Yet many organisations remain uncertain about where to begin, which opportunities are worthwhile and how to manage the associated clinical, ethical and operational risks.
Drawing on three years of implementation experience across Aotearoa, Australia and the UK, this practical session moves beyond speculation to examine how mental health organisations are using AI today. Real-world examples include reducing referral processing from approximately 20 minutes to two minutes, saving clinicians around 10 hours/month in documentation, and doubling the reach of youth mentoring without compromising engagement, satisfaction or outcomes.
Participants will be introduced to practical frameworks for assessing AI opportunities by risk and return, determining the appropriate level of AI autonomy, and building the systems, governance and organisational capability required for responsible adoption. The objective is not AI adoption itself. It is helping mental health organisations use AI confidently to improve access to and quality of care.
Four implementations, three frameworks, your questions answered
First look at the 2026 findings
What has changed in AI adoption across mental health services over the past year, and what the 2026 report explores.
Four real-world implementations
Referral processing, clinical documentation, youth mentoring at scale and AI-assisted intake, each examined for the operational and clinical value it created.
Frameworks for confident adoption
Assess opportunities by risk and return, decide the appropriate level of AI autonomy, and build the governance and capability responsible adoption requires.
